How to Get Your Makeup Right in Summer?

Summer around here puts beauty to the test: it's hard to keep a fresh look under a blazing sun, when the thermometer hovers around 45 degrees. Here's how to work around these challenges and stay the naiad of summer.

How should you prep your skin for summer makeup?

The skincare routines you follow year-round still apply in summer: exfoliating, masking, moisturizing, hair care. As for fragrance, go for lighter scents, like eau parfumée (with less alcohol, often floral or fruity), and save the stronger scents (musk, patchouli, oud) for winter. Certain essences (psoralens: lemongrass, lime, bergamot, geranium) can trigger photosensitizing reactions: avoid applying them directly to the neck and décolleté, and check that your perfume doesn't stain. Foods rich in beta-carotene, a precursor of vitamin A, are also said to prep the skin for tanning and improve complexion.

How should you do your base makeup in summer?

Sun protection remains essential before any sun exposure, ideally paired with a moisturizer that has a UV rating.

OptionWho it's for
Tinted sunscreen (SPF 30 to 50)Those who are in a hurry or want to cover up small imperfections
BB creamFor a hydrated, even complexion; add a layer of sunscreen at the beach

How should you do your eye and lip makeup in summer?

Since sunglasses are worn almost constantly, a line of eyeliner and a waterproof mascara are enough, in creamy waterproof formulas or with a setting primer underneath. Favor neutral shades (brown, copper, nude, gold), which suit all skin tones better, especially once tanned, and use kohl sparingly. For lips, go for subtle shades (nude, coral, pale pink) rather than overly bold colors, after thoroughly moisturizing your lips.

How can you enhance your body in summer?

Traditional harkouss, once reserved for brides, is now winning over body-art enthusiasts under the name “temporary tattoo.” Shimmering oils, applied after a shower or when coming back from the beach, subtly enhance a tan. Body contouring (on the décolleté, for instance, with a dark powder) requires, as with the face, a fair bit of skill. Worth noting: the current beauty trend actually favors little to no makeup at all.
