Founded in 2012, La Sultane was entirely transformed after it was acquired in 2014 by Xéna-Éditions, a company set up by three partners (N. J. M, A. A, H. C) and managed by Noura Jamila Mahouchi.
Determined to offer content worthy of the title, the team roots the magazine’s editorial line in the challenges of its time. La Sultane takes up the challenge of being a woman in a society that is searching for itself and renewing itself, after the Tunisian revolution of 2011.
What does La Sultane do?
It supports and celebrates women’s initiatives — artistic, activist, entrepreneurial and social. It speaks out against the normalisation of violence towards women and children, and against everyday misogyny. It approaches taboo and uncomfortable subjects with care, offers constructive criticism, and calls on experts and specialists to enrich its content with their analyses and suggestions.
Alongside its unconditional support for women’s causes, La Sultane works to promote Tunisia’s cultural heritage, both tangible and intangible: making the inland regions better known, revealing unusual places, and celebrating the richness of local produce and craft.
About the magazine
La Sultane is a Tunisian monthly magazine, distributed throughout Tunisia. Published by Xéna-Éditions, it addresses a female readership aged 25 to 65. Each copy is estimated to be read by six to eight people.
The launch of a website alongside the print edition, in 2016, opened the way to sharing on social media and enriched the magazine with interactive content: videos, reports and competitions.
La Sultane reaches beyond borders thanks to a largely French-speaking audience spread across Africa (Algeria, Morocco, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire and more), Europe (France, Switzerland, Belgium and more) and North America (Canada, the United States).
The tone is intellectual and accessible: serious, never intimidating. Long forms — portraits, interviews and essays — hold pride of place, for reading that invites reflection and dialogue.
